If you need to improve yourself in various aspects, there some fundamental values you must hold on to for the progress to prevail. They’re quite a big number but I chose to write about the sense of belonging. It’s more like a sense of attachment or a connection to a group of people or to a place. It’s of high regard just in case one wants to execute at a higher level because of the drive it gives.

When for instance you’re employed by a certain company and you feel part of it, you’re most likely to perform better than someone who’s at the company for the sake of lack of options or just to collect  wages. When you treat a company as your own, you will be more attentive to every detail in order to see what’s not going right and where there is need for improvement. On the other hand, if you lack that sense of attachment, you will only mind about coming to work to do only your duties  and later leave which is so basic. The company might not tell you but they need more than that. They need someone with full awareness of what’s happening around and on high alert in order to identify challenges and possible solutions.

That’s the only way a company can grow and eventually, the outcome is the growth of employees though most people who lack a sense of belonging never think about that. So in the end, businesses are failing simply because of employing people who lack basic values. Employees who can not fully invest themselves in the business. That also contributes to the high level of unemployment because when businesses fail, many get unemployed which comes along with a lot of problems. And unfortunately, very few are worried and concerned about self-improvement. Rather, the majority are worried about who is the next president. By the time things work in everyone’s favour, we shall have lost more than enough.

There’re very many people who are willing to start up at least something that can employ five people. They have financial backing but unfortunately, they’re afraid to start because they can’t find people with the right attitude to get the ventures going. No one wants to lose their money, therefore if we want to encourage start-ups, we the youth have to fix our attitude and mentality to start taking ownership and give all our best to businesses/companies that employ us amidst challenges that I’m aware of. We must persist and stop thinking it might get better any sooner. We must instead devise means to thrive in harsh conditions and figure out our progress. It’s a battle we have to fight other than conceding defeat.
Lack of sense of belonging goes beyond businesses and youths. It’s a bigger problem especially in African countries in different avenues, for example, politics. The way some African leaders exercise power might make you think they don’t belong to their respective countries because if you truly love your country then it should reflect in the way you make your decisions but the majority of our leaders simply don’t belong. We need leaders who attach strong value to their countries, who think about tomorrow and who have the countries at heart.

Lack of sense of belonging might be having a bigger negative impact on our countries’ development more than one might think. It’s the root cause of much evil we see because if you highly regard and value something, then you’re going to be careful but because of lack of sense of belonging, the outcome is corruption, embezzlement, shoddy work projects, etc. This is simply because most people from whom we expect a lot already lost that sense. I can’t construct a bad road in my home town simply because I highly regard it. I’m also going to be using the road so this should apply in everything we do.

Going back to businesses, the way you treat someone’s business is the same way someone will treat yours in the future so for a second, think about it and ask yourself whether your actions now would bring about progress if taken by someone else in the future in your own company. That will always help you feel guilty consciousness when you’re about to mess around. While still at other people’s businesses, we must be preparing our minds to become better CEOs with the prospect of getting independent in the future. So in whatever we do, let’s treat it like it’s ours and we will be destined for greatness and no employer will wish to part ways with us. Choose to belong.
